Getting to know the cast of CODA

The Hollywood reporter has published a long article about Daniel Durant, Troy Kotsur and Marlee Matlin—the stars of the new film CODA.

Oscar-winning star Marlee Matlin tells the Hollywood Reporter, "To have a hearing actor put on a deaf character as if it was a costume — we’ve moved beyond that point now." She's part of what made the indie film CODA sell at Sundance for a record-breaking $25 million. Having such a strong deaf presence on the set made a difference in how the film was written and shot. For instance:

When the on-set ASL master, Anne Tomasetti, stepped into the Rossi family living room for the first time, she quickly pointed out that in a deaf household, the couch would be facing the front door. “Suddenly, we were moving furniture around and setting up the living room in a way that you would have sight lines to the entrances and exits,” since anyone who walks in through the door can’t be heard.
