Hartford Hospital in Connecticut has settled an ADA Complaint for failing to provide a sign language interpreter to a patient.

The unnamed patient asked for an interpreter multiple times over several days at the Institute of Living, a mental health center at Hartford Hospital but was refused. The settlement requires Hartford to pay the patient $10,000 and agreed to provide interpreters in the future free of charge to patients.

Acting U.S. Attorney Boyle spoke for the Dept. of Justice:

“This case demonstrates this office’s commitment to protecting the rights of those who are deaf or hard of hearing, and ensuring that these individuals are able to effectively communicate with health care professionals.I thank the Institute of Living at Hartford Hospital for their cooperation during this investigation and for addressing these ADA issues without the need for litigation.”
