UCLA adds ASL class for Dental students

The UCLA School of Dentistry has added a class on Deaf culture, Deaf history, and American Sign Language.

The hope is that those training to be dentists will have a basic understanding of the best ways to interact with Deaf and Hard of Hearing patients. The five-week long elective course will be taught by Andrew Moore, who is an ASL instructor and Deaf interpreter. Moore says:


“Upon taking these classes, I hope that these dental students will gain appreciation, awareness, sensitivity, and understanding when interacting with Deaf and Hard of Hearing patients.”

The UCLA Student Organizations and Leadership Office provided the funding for the class.
